Cancer Coaches

What is a Cancer Coach?

The role of a cancer coach is to partner with the patient to help them throughout their cancer journey. A cancer coach will help the client to learn about evidence-based integrative approaches that could help them during their cancer journey.

As a well-rounded resource for cancer patients, AltCare embraces the role of the cancer coach. To wit, cancer coaches work independently, not for a hospital or cancer center, which means that health insurers do not cover their fees.

Cancer coaches tend to enter their line of work because of personal experience with the disease, either as a patient or caregiver. Some coaches offer guidance through the entire journey, from diagnosis and treatment to survivorship.

These coaches are a lifeline for patients and often are the bridge between mentally and physically choosing to fight for their lives.

Often, patients who want to hire a cancer coach must do their own research and go with their gut. A good way to start: AltCare’s list of preferred partners.

Shannon Knight

Shannon Knight is a Stage IV breast cancer survivor – healed completely without chemotherapy. She battled Stage III in 2006, where the University of Washington Medical Center recommended a bilateral mastectomy, radiation, and chemo. Shannon could only do surgery due to severe staph infection complications, which prevented her from receiving other recommended treatments.By 2010, she was facing a Stage IV recurrence with metastasis to  the lungs, bones, and lymph nodes.  UCLA recommended chemo and radiation.

Shannon did radiation and once again faced another staph infection and was unable to receive chemo. CLA told Shannon she only had months to live. Still, she did not give up and decided to go to CMN Hospital in San Luis, Rio Colorado, Mexico, for alternative cancer treatment. Health Insurance would not cover the treatments, so she started Angels for Shannon to raise funds for her cancer treatment. It took five months, but she finally raised enough money to get treatment at CMN Hospital, where Dr. Edgar Payan ultimately saved her life. Shannon has been cancer-free since October 2011, and continues her mission with Angels for Shannon to help others facing financial distress.
